A FILMMAKER’S NOTE

Paris, Woven from Cinema

For me, Paris isn't the classic place most people see: a city for romantics, postcards and walks along the river. For me, it's a city woven from fragments of my favourite films and, of course, the New Wave. You can still come across what inspired Truffaut and Godard, and before them Bresson, Louis Malle, Melville. That is, you walk down a street and recognise a shot you've seen many times. And again, it's not only the classics. You keep walking and stumble on moments from more recent films: Besson, Carax, Linklater and so on. It turns into a whole journey through different periods, different moods of the city, different cultures, a whole layer of them. Paris has absorbed some of the most important films ever made, and every artist saw and reflected this city in their own way. So for me, it's not just a tourist location I come to. It's a chance to touch what I love most about cinema. To see this city with my own eyes and, at the same time, remember what it was like to see it in film.
